Well, I made it through the first week of school...well, work. It wasn't easy since I spent most of the week worrying about my stepdad. I felt pretty lost the first two days, but I got back in the game by Wednesday and things were good from there.
I have 5 classes--about 120 kids--coming into my classroom each day. Yikes (I am a Social Studies/Reading&Language Arts teacher, btw)!
For the most part, they have been well behaved. I am having a tough time with names, though! As of yesterday, I had 80% of their names memorized, but when I go back on Tuesday, some of those percentage points might decrease.
We've already met with the parents of a child who is already acting up in class. Based on what the parents said, he has alot of issues that we will have to deal with. Hopefully, we will make progress with him.
I also received my first walk-through visit from an administrator (gosh...so soon...sigh). My report was positive for the most part, although I was told I needed to display thinking maps I was working on with the students...which I DID have displayed and which she probably didn't see from where she was sitting...anywho...
Hope to have a good year.
I was just saying to my wife last night how that aspect of bein a teacher would be tough -having summer off and going back! But, like I told my wife, being a teacher is really a calling and not so much a "job" per se anyway so going back to work is proabably way more palatable for teachers.
Yes!
Glad your first week went fairly well. We start on Tuesday. I'm so excited! I know most of my students from last year, and we have a new principal, who is *AMAZING*.
I hope that your year goes well. I want to come visit your class!
I hope things continue to go well. You sure have a lot of kids!!
My boys are enjoying school this year, and it seems so important to get things off to a good start. It really sets the tone for the year.
Ugh, that sucks!
Thanks, Roy. I did have a long summer, and even though I may have groaned a bit, I was pretty much ready to go back.
I think it's awesome that you already know most of your students from last year. I had one year, when I was moved from 4th to 5th, where I got most of my class from the year before. I loved it.
Hope your school year goes great, too. Good luck!
Yep, it is a big group of kids...more than last year. I hope I get used to it. How was the first week of school for your boys? I hope it was good...and I hope the rest of their year goes well, too.
Good luck with it all. I wouldn't be able to remember 10% of the names after so short a time.
Just a brief funny regarding school year and names.
I was a teacher once upon a midnight dreary...and I taught in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. One of the schools was a pretty small school out in farm land. So, I get the rosters for my classes, and I'm looking at the names. And I think "how weird...there's a Chinese kid out here in farm country, SC?" Then I look down the roster and am perplexed. "Another one?"
Silly me. See they both had these weird middle names...I figured they must be Chinese. The middle name was "Nmn." (If YOU don't get it, just like *I* didn't...think about it a while )
Yea, that would be tough. Almost like getting a new job every year! I am glad that most of the people's names I need to remember dont change every year.
Hoep this year is a rewarding one for you!
Memorizing names...ugh...
Glad you had a good first week, minus the administrators lack of detail..heh.
Heres to a great school year all the way through.
Thanks, Mark. I pretty much have everyone memorized now...although I do go blank at least once a day...lol
LoL on the Middle name, Razor. I once did that when looking at a college football schedule. I wondered, "Who is this team, BYE, that my college is playing? I've never heard of them!" Chris (my sweetie) just laughed at me and pointed out that it meant a break for the week. I felt foolish.
Oh, it's just a way to get students' thinking organized by using a graphic ...something like this
Thank you, Doc. I am hoping and praying for a good year, too.
Thank you, Tova! Hope you kids (and yourself) have a great school year, too!
Hey Rose,
I am just seeing this. I hope things have settled in well for you and your dad is doing better. You had quite a load on your shoulders the first week. I hope that's an indication of smooth sailing for the rest of the year. We can hope!
Wow...your classes ar huge!
On another note...ahh...administration! They all just scare me. It's funny, I think I'm very strong and opinionated, but once a higher up talks to me I just feel like they can squash me like a bug. I have my first tenure observation in about a week..woo!
Hope you are having a great school year!!
