Well, it's been over a month since Flagship Studios closed down, and the little Tugboat project known as Mythos was closed down. Those who were active in the Mythos Beta know what a strong community it had, and how supportive things were between the Devs and the players.
I don't think a project will ever exist with a Dev-Player bond like the one Mythos had (except for maybe whatever RunicGames ends up making, since they ARE the entire Mythos team...the only one missing from the team is Taylor, the former CM...so once they get a Community Manager they're all set to pick up right where they left off)
This thread is to serve as a bit of reminiscing about Mythos...a little discussion about RunicGames' future...and a little bit of what you're looking for in a game to replace that spot Mythos holds in your heart.
I had a lot of fun with mythos...I had gotten into stage one after beta testing hellgate for a good while.
I can't tell you how excited I am to try out demigod, I really enjoyed the hack and slash aspect but no doubt my favorite type of game comes down to RTS and single hero RTS like dota
I think Mythos had a real chance at being something special, its jsut too bad that it never got finished and released.
I just noticed that Mythos is still isntalled on my comptuer
wasn't in the beta but i heard about it getting shut down. sad
I thoroughly enjoyed the beta, although it was a constant fear that by the time the beta was done, the game would already be "old" compared to other games released at the same time. I also enjoyed hellgate london, and whatever the reasons were, I am sad to see that their plans could not come to be realised.
It's a free market out there, and sometimes even diamonds get crushed in between the gears.
Yo.
I hated hellgate:london with a passion, but Mythos was real nice.
Did EA have anything to do with the shut down?
Nope. According to some recent interviews, Namco caused Hellgate more problems than EA did. But mostly, it was because an incomplete product was released, and before the game could be improved, the majority of the fanbase was too jaded to continue supporting the game, and with so much negative word out about the game, box sales died instantly w/ith no respawn.
As for Mythos, it never even made it to release, despite the very promising idea of the game and the payment model. However, within weeks of the closing, Max Schaefer (Executive Producer of Mythos, one of the former lead designers of the Diablo games) and Travis Baldree (Lead Designer of Fate and Mythos), as well as everyone else who worked at the Seattle office of Flagship started Runic Games.
Runic Games hasn't announced what they're making yet, but they've made it pretty apparent that they want to go for another Action/RPG-style game with MMO aspects. I'm very much looking forward to whatever they do, because I've never seen a more open, communicative development team than the one Travis Baldree headed up as Flagship Seattle.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what kind of art style they crank out now that they'll be starting from scratch...and REALLY looking forward to what kind of PvP system they unveil, given the fact that it won't be an afterthought this time. Mythos' Shadowlands and planned CTF matches were both afterthoughts, and the game wasn't at all built around them...so I'm really looking forward to seeing how Travis handles PvP in a game starting from the ground up.
They made bad decisions with the "hybrid" gameplay, horrible skill trees, not enough content, horrible optimisation.
And EA didn't rsh them.. they kept pushing back and EA finally siad that's it.
They'd been working on the game forever with a team of 110+, tons of stuff outsourced to Asia, and had little to show for it.
