This. Absolutely love it. Now I can look at my desktop without weeping blood. (I seriously used to weep blood at the sight of my desktop. True fact.)
It's really working perfectly, I've done everything I can think of to break it, and nothing's worked.
I'm loving this - this is what I've needed since Microsoft pretty much threw away icon groups from Windows 3 and shoved everything into the Start Menu in Windows 95 .
BTW, I noticed that when you first install, it can create Fences for Programs, Files & Docs, Folders, etc - I think it would be very nice to be able to modify some sort of set of rules or filters, and be able to apply them at any time, and have them automatically applied to new items.
AGREE!!!! this would be nice also to have NEW icons places in the correct fence when they are created.
Okay. I've been loving Fences. Just a few suggestions or issues.
Wow, this is really cool. At first use it reminds me of dragthing for mac. It would also nice to create url's and put them in fences also. But then that would be in conflict with my rightclick app. [ i put my favorite links in it ] But that would be a very efficient feature for people who don't use rightclick [shame on you] Anyways, love what i'm seeing with this app, and hope to see further developement with it's progress.
I've got internet shortcuts in fences. Isn't that a URL?
Pretty much. Technically, a URL is just a bunch of text. A shortcut is a small file that tells the OS where something is - in this case, it tells the OS to launch the default browser with the URL.
So yeah, you can put URLs on the desktop and in fences.
Just drag and drop the icon of the website onto the desktop. Works with any major browser.

Bah.. *waits patiently, ......okay maybe not SO patiently* for an invite to the beta
*runs off to check email again* hehe
Sounds great and I am waitin for an invite to the beta
Anne
ah didn't know that/ didn't try that. either way cool!
This is so cool! Just a double click away from an unimpeded desktop, dream or the use of my sorted shortcuts! Now I can use an ObjectDock zoomer for everyday stuff, OD plus tabs for infrequent stuff and Fences for stuff I use every now and then! (Like defrager, backup prog, CCleaner Etc.) I like the fact that they sort of dock to the sides and each other, even when sizing. Makes lining them up easy!
Me too. That Jeff is a clever bugger.
Anne, here's your invitation: http://islanddog.wincustomize.com/articles.aspx?aid=321808
It would be nice if it remembered it's show/hide state between shut-downs.
Everytime I turn on my computer, Fences is showing, even if it was hidden when I turned off my PC

um... thanks for the link Mirs... but thats just a link to the INFO website.. I signed up for the beta when ID posted that but I haven't yet gotten an actual invite to download Fences yet..
I am keepin an eye out and hopin that I will get it soon or sometime.
Sorry... I posted that link intending to direct you to the info site. I didn't realize you'd already signed up for it. Maybe we protest and form a picket line...
Any updates since the initial beta?
Just checking in..
Just checked the website. No updates as of yet, far as I can tell.
One more minor issue: When I rename a file or folder that is in a fence, once I'm done renaming it, it pops out of the fence. Is there a way to keep this from happening, or is this a bug?
For some reason when I drag something onto my desktop some random icon comes out of its fence.
You need to treat your icons better, they're trying to escape...
Mirsguy - XP or vista? And what kind of file / shortcut / whatever. Thanks
Jeff: Vista Ultimate 64x. And dang! I can't remember what it was! That was a whole 4 days ago!
