Whoops, didn't even figure that I would be the first post.
Had no problem downloading and getting Fences to open.
Menus look very nice and clean, informative with just enough info.
No problems with moving the Fences around or resizing them.
I was at a slight disadventage since I don't have a desktop with lots or even a few icons. Lets see there is the trash bin and then the Fences icon and, that's it.
I did notice that it doesn't play nice with a couple of programs, Stardock Virtual Desktop, woundn't show the different wallpapers by desktop (cleared up with uninstalling). Right Click doen't show the options for Fences. Not sure if there are others.
Unless I just couldn't see it, it saw no way to close or shut down Fences.
Understanding that this is a side project, what is the estimated time for the beta and when will updates be issued?
I can see how this would or could be usefull to what you might call power users, programmers/developers or possibly even skinners. Some my say you could use ObjectDock Plus for this also. I think though the agrument could me made that ObjectDock Plus would be for more permanent items while Fences would be utilized for the short term projects that people would be working on.
Now comes the question if I would use Fences, probably not, but that does not mean that it doesn't have the potential to become a popular desktop management tool.
Looking forward to reading others comments.
I don't get anything new when I right click the desktop, as it says I will...see shot. Supposed to right click the desktop to edit fences. Hmmm...
I'm using v 0.92.708 and have had no problems. I did find a hiccup while using WindowFX to hide desktop icon text; Fences takes control of all aspecvts of the icons without checking for previously existing hooks. The workaround is to disable Fences, hide the text with WindowFX then re-enable Fences. It is necessary to do this at every reboot. I do some skinning and am a programmer as well so reboots are no stranger to me. BTW I'm on XP pro sp3 and up to date on my OD subscription, using dual monitors on a home network.
I'm the same as you Jim, I don't see it in my desktop R/C.
But what I am writing in for is to say how awesome I think this is for the reason of when you use winrar wizard or anything of that nature, it actually picks up the folders in "My Computer" so you can actually drop photo's or walls into the folders you have in fences, I don't know about you folk, but I am using it for quick access to folders as well as cleaning up my icons, but to tell you the truth the only icon I have in their is my recycle bin, the rest is folders....I think this is an awesome little big app.....congrats Stardock
1st would like to thank ya'll for including me in the BETA. I just got the 0.92.708 version installed and was curious since I haven't seen anyone yet with a twin monitor situation post yet.
Personally this is something I can really use since I average about 20-30 icons on my desktop at a time. Is nice to be able to place the Fences with all the mess onto my top monitor and my dbl. clicks on my main monitor don't effect the Fences. If I need to get into them I just go to the secondary monitor and everything acts normally. (Well, what I presume is normal..hehe) Only been messin with them 20 minutes now and am impressed. Nice to see what my backgrounds look like again.
Currently running 4 Fences with about 6 shortcuts and folders in each with not hiccups. Only curiosity I have is why the "My Computer" and "Recycle Bin" icnos still show through when the Fences are closed. Would be nice to see them hide also since I am aware of where I placed them. They do obediantly stay inside the Fences though.
Haven't seen anything odd yet, but, will be posting occasionally. Sure am curious my if Ol' Man Grates is so smart why this wasn't an idea in any of his "fabulous" products. hehehe
LivinTarget - those are set by default to still show when your fences are hidden. Perrhaps I should turn that default off, it seems to cause more confusion than anything. You can reset them by right clicking those icons and unchecking "Exclude from quickhide"
Glad you're [all] enjoying the product
AHHhhhhh .... DOH!!! .. I guess if I'd have looked at the context menu instead of being so busy changing and adding to clear my desktop I'd have seen that...LOL. This is so KEWL dude. Can't thank you enough.
Everytime I create a new shortcut on the desktop, explorer freezes and has to be 'restartet'I'm not sure if it's because of Fences since it can't be shut down.....Everything else keeps on working just fine. It's just the desktop that appears to be inaccesable.
Could someone else try that please? (rightclick desktop -> new -> shortcut)The shortcut gets created but Explorer goes belly-up.
Thanks
Hrm...
Vista Ultimate here.
Creating new desktop shortcuts not a problem here on Ultimate x64 Snowman.
No problem for me (Vista Ultimate 32 here)
Hi Snowman... can you open up taskmanager and try this a fewtimes to help diagnose if this is/isn't Fences?
1) Have Fences enabled, and try reproducing2) Kill Explorer.exe from taskmanager if its hung, and relaunch. Then *disable fences* via "Edit Fences..."->Tools->"More Tools..." (near bottom) -> "Enable fences" (uncheck). Try reproducing.
Repeat the above step a couple times...if you get the same result 3x over, its pretty safe to say Fences is involved. If it happens every time whether Fences is enabled or not, its probably something else on your sys.
You can also look at the crash details, when crashes do come up. What could be helpful is (a) the crash module (explorer.exe? desktopdock.dll? (fences is desktopdock.dll)) ( the crash address (c) the crash type name
I appreciate the help testing!
Everything awesome for v0.92.708 here.
Using Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit.
Need any experimenting then just gimme a message.
And if you're wondering why I'm asking it is because Home Premium 32 bit is or should be the most common Vista OS out there.
Fences can be shut down. Open customize fences, go to tools, click the more tools option at bottom left, choose disable fences.
Seems to be a nice program however it doesn't work on my computer.
When I start Fences I get a warning that Fences haven't been loaded and that I should reinstall Fences.
Tried it, and it still doesn't work, no fences no right clicks ...
Someone got a solution ?
I'm runnin' on XP SP3
It seems that the program doesn't really like constantly switching to (similar) resolutions when working via remote desktop. I fairly frequently switch between 1280x1024 and 1600x1200, and it then doesn't resize/remember the sizes of the various fences, even though it does when i switch between 1600 and 1024 (my mom still has a 15" laptop). do more people encounter this behavior?
Explorer pukes everytime I try it.
Without Fences -> no problems.
No chrashes. Explorer just seem to 'halt'.
Humpty-bumpty
I still get that stupid message that tells me that Fences isn't loaded and i probably have to reinstall it, I tried a few times but no succes... But it would be helpfull
grtz
I have not tried to reproduce but last night I had an odd bug when logging on as a guest account then logging in with an admin account. No fences at all.
I'd expect the next release to have another larger sample adn even better feedback.
Your time will come.
I signed up for a beta invite a while ago and am still waiting as well. Any idea when the next round of invites will roll out? Really eager to test this software which looks like a real gem.
Cheers.
I must be really bad beta tester as I can't find almost anything wrong with it...
I mainly use the doubleclick desktop feature to keep my icons hidden, so I also would like to have a way to display files dragged to desktop show up somewhere while rest of the icons are hidden.
so:
while icons are hidden, files copied to desktop or dropped to desktop could appear on a maybe previously defined fence?
