The good news is that there will be a Galactic Civilizations III. The bad news is that it won't be out this decade.
Galactic Civilizations II v2.0 is currently in development but it's free for all players of the expansion packs. But that will serve as the code basis for any further GalCiv II updates.
Right now, the team is working on the "unnamed fantasy strategy game" sometimes called "not-MOM" (not Master of Magic). It's a totally new graphics engine that makes use of multi-core CPUs and GPUs but will still run fine on lower end hardware thanks to built-in detection that will determine "how much stuff" to display in real-time.
That game will go into public beta early next year and its release date will be largely based on player feedback. As many of you know, we are in the position of being able to keep working on our games until everyone's happy with them. Our non-game part of the company does so well that there's no pressure. We want to make it the best turn-based strategy game of all time.
THAT engine will be what serves as the basis of a future Galactic Civilizations III. That means GalCiv III will have features like tactical battles (as an option), multiplayer, more sophisticated planetary development, and much more.
This decade!?!
Oh wait, that's less than 2 years away... almost had me going there Brad... hehe.
But seriously, you people are the best... the absolute best!
I'm intrigued by what changes v2.0 will bring to the game and also eagerly anticipating "news as it happens" regarding the upcoming "not-MOM" game in development.
On behalf of insomniacs everywhere, we thank you and your dedicated, hard working Stardock team.
Cheers!
Any chance it might be written to be Linux compatible?

I for one am happy with GC2 so far, and will be for a loong time being Looking very much forward to "not-MoM" though. Hope to see a great game there.

No Metaverse. I'm not gonna purchase GC3...mabye.
I'm a bit doubtful about the multiplayer mode of GC3. My main interest in games is SP, and GC2 provides an amazing AI. I fear that multiplayer would lead to much more tweaks in order to make races balanced as opposed to the varied approach that GC2 offers.
Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to not-MoM in particular.
if there still costom ships makeing in GALCIV III then i will buy it just to see the Enterprise
I think there will be. I think Stardock will use ideas from GC II and it's exspansion packs to make GC III even better.
Make that *nix comptible There are more *nix OS's than Linux, such as Mac OS X and FreeBSD. But personally, I would be happy if it was written such that it could run fine through WINE. E.g. I can play SR2 under FreeBSD/WINE just fine.
And by that, you mean January 1st, right? Okay, okay, that's a holiday, so January 2nd...
Sorry, I'm just really looking forward to it. Heck, I'm looking forward to just seeing a single screenshot of it!
It would indeed be a great leap into TBS innovation; options & available features will certainly become what sets apart titles - more so, if the fanbase is willing to tackle 'better' gameplay elements.
WoW really cranked the ground level tactics to new heights, in fact. Which **CAN** be improved upon with new engines.
Heck, i may even find time to buy & enjoy some fantasy work by our favorite designers.
Can't believe I am saying this but.... "OH BOY!" Hey I just might be able to work on GC3 by the time I am done with college... hopefully I'll get hired at Stardock... That would be the BEST! Can't wait to beta test the new game. Its been awhile since I played a Fantasy RTS game.
Can't wait! You guys do a great job, keep up the good work!
What you wrote is meaningfull and as usual you are also providing free additional stuff for us (GC2 V2).
Just one question: I still have 7 tokens.
I'll be interested in the future fantasy game and then GCIII.
I guess you'll release both through impulse where tokens are not counted.
Will you be so kind, as many times in the past, to handle my purchase with tokens? Obviously I'll want to be in the beta, but just don't ask me to have Vista.
I also support the Linux-Wine compatibility request. I'm sure the Wine developmet group would love to be involved if you see a way.
Take care, Gherardo
Please no multiplayer.... pleaseeeeee!
GalCiz is my last bastion of decent single player AI.
I adore this game for that reason above all others.
Please don't introduce multiplayer. My wish is for you to focus resources on an even more advanced AI.
We plan to continue putting our first-party games up on TGN so they can be bought with tokens.
Looking forward to the next decade then
My god i will be nearly 40 when it comes out
On a high note i am looking forward to 2.0 and hoping it gives us loads of new content for free LOL. Thanks Frogboyfor the freebie update in all seriousness.
The not MoM I am not excited for but GC3 yes.
Likewise!
Add multiplayer to GC3 only if you are sure about that you do not have to sacrifice any cool features for single player or the game in general.
I was worried this was going to become fallout three.
GalCiv III? Sounds good . Now to figure out what to do with GalCiv II 2.0 (.2r2b2?) when GalCiv III comes out.
Take your time, get it right .
Not gonna play the fantasy game (fantasy's just not my genre - personal taste), but the engine sure sounds cool. Mind if I ask which versions of DirectX it'll support?
Yeah, I love that stuff . Keep a few devs working on them, please!!
Sounds great .
As long as multiplayer is added early and simply factored into the implentation time of individual features, I don't foresee it coming at the expense of single player features.
Not even an RPG fan? It's gonna be fun!
DirectX 9c (Shader2) will be our min requirement. The engine is built to allow DirecttX10 and 11 support too, so we'll see what expanded features those libraries allow.
Question, are you looking for any sort of concept art design for units? I know someone local to your area who'd be suited for it.
Also, when you say multi-core, how will it take advantage of that? Same way GCII does by applying one core to the AI?
Make use of Shader Model 3.0 or better 4.0 too
