Starting with the release of Impulse on June 17th, 2008, TotalGaming.net will begin to transition over to Stardock's new Impulse store. Impulse is a new platform for Windows that combines games, applications, and robust community tools (i.e., blogging, live chat, forums, Friends lists and more) into one client. For existing TotalGaming.net members, we're not leaving you out in the cold. Your tokens will not expire and can be used to purchase any game available from the TotalGaming.net website. However, we will not be selling any new TotalGaming.net memberships or token booster packs.
If you have any questions about the transition, please feel free to post in this thread and we'll do our best to answer them.
While I can't say for certain there won't be any new 1 token games added, it's probably unlikely, in which case you're stuck. Impulse will not use a token system. Part of the ongoing problem of getting new games added is that publishers/developers didn't like that business model, so it's going away forever. People at large just didn't "get" the token concept anyway (it was a point of constant confusion).
We're still discussing what else may be possible in terms of coupons, etc. but I don't have any details yet.
All of your purchased games will appear in Impulse. The reason why they haven't yet is because we haven't made them live before late this afternoon.
Demigod and all new games will only appear in Impulse. We will not be supporting them on SDC.
There's nothing like that at the current time. The problem is that most publishers simply refuse to accept such systems, which is what's kept most higher profile titles off our digital store. There will almost certainly be special sales and coupon offers from time-to-time, however.
Hi all,
I just wanted to give a quick update on upcoming token-purchasable games for TotalGaming.net members. Coming soon will be Kalypso Media's Imperium Romanum - Wilds of Germania. This is a micro-expansion pack for Imperium Romanum that will cost $5.99 or 1 Token. I hope to have this live today.
Also coming up is a new adventure game from Lighthouse Interactive called Belief & Betrayal. This title will cost $29.99 or 3 Tokens; I hope to have this live early next week on TGN.
For those who don't use Tokens, they will both be on Impulse today. (For those wondering, the reason for the delay for TGN is because I have to build the game pages here manually, so it takes a lot longer to put stuff up.)
Gang, we are not screwing you over. How anyone can claim that with a straight face is beyond me. Your tokens will not expire, we will still be adding some new games to TGN, and you can use your tokens on them if you want. Same as always. The only thing that's changed is that we're not selling new tokens because we need to ramp down this business model.
We are also looking into giving people the option of turning their tokens into a "gift card" of sorts, that you can use towards anything we sell. However, this is going to take us quite a bit of time to develop as we don't have anything like it at the moment.
The token business model was not popular with customers (most found it confusing) or with developers (they found it confusing and were simply unwilling to even try it - one publisher even demanded 100% of the revenue). It was not sustainable moving forward and we had to change it.
SDC will continue to function for awhile longer, however, newer games' archive files won't be compatible with it since Impulse is using a different compression scheme.
The Impulse archive functionality is not good. It's slow, it's uninformative, and just not cool. I am not happy with it at all and it's in the queue for an overhaul with Phase 2 of Impulse in a month or so. Apart from its slowness and lack of coolness, however, it works pretty much the same as SDC's did - so as long as you have a copy of Impulse around, you can always restore an archive from it (and I believe Impulse does - or will - restore SDC archives too).
For those who want to purchase individual tokens, they will go on sale on Monday. More info with details for how this will work can be found here: http://tgnforums.stardock.com/315721/page/1/#1797720
