Candidate for Mod Database's 2008 Mod of the Year
This is the OLD "Work in Progress" thread for the Star Trek: Sacrifice of Angels 2 mod.
The new WIP topic is here https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/342747
The "Release" topic can be found here https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/322473
The mod is intended to be a hommage, and tribute to the original Sacrifice of Angels mod for Homeworld. It will use many of the same models, and effects created for that mod by the Trekmods team. Like the original SoA mod SoA2 is set during the Dominion War era of Star Trek. Using both canon, and non-canon units to recreate those battles with Sins "empire building" mechanic added. Like in SoA you can fight battles in SoA2 using hundreds of starships. Sometimes thousands if your computer can handle it While the mod was not intended as a "Total Conversion". That is exactly what it is winding up being. There is much about the Sins engine, and mechanics that we still need to learn. There are some hard coded stumbling blocks we have to overcome. The factions will be the Federation, Klingons, Romulan, and the Dominion (with Breen, and Cardassian ally units). The main factions seen in the Dominion War. With a "Surprise" as the Pirate faction.
Factions like the Borg "may" be added in the future. LokiGodofMischief is working on a very good 3rd party Borg add on for SoA 2. It is very possible his add on may be merged with SoA 2 at a much later time.
The current version of SoA 2 is 0.03b "The Second Dominion War". Look for it here https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/322473
0.03b only works with Sins versions 1.1, 1.11, and 1.12.
All previous versions of SoA 2 are obsolete, and will not be supported, or hosted anymore. All older version downloads will be removed.
We will NOT port SoA 2 over to Entrenchment until after Entrenchment is out of beta, and released. Along with proper forge tool updates.
I am working on the models mostly ALONE so it may take a while for any new ship model updates.
Darkshimmer is the Balancing guru, Code monkey, and Master at arms. We do have other contributers, and the best 3rd party work from the finest artists in the trek mod community to help make SoA 2 the best it can be.
Status of Demo 0.04 "The actors are in place"
Will update when i have news.
General Changes:
Manshooters Volumetric Explosions mod will be included as of 0.03a
May include Sins Plus (planets), but ill need to see how much that mod needs changing to incorporate into SoA 2.
SoA 2 0.03 and above is now patch 1.1, and better compatable. Sins patches 1.11, and 1.12 only address balancing, and online exploits, and have no effect on the mod.
Ships will have some anti stike craft weaponry.
Ships are still being added and balanced accordingly.
More re-balancing so that one faction is not overpowered over the other.
The Federation:
Faction is complete. Only structures left
The Klingon Empire
Faction is complete. Only structures left.
The Romulan Star Empire:
The Dominion:
Faction is complete. Still needs balancing work.
Pirates:
They were going to be the Borg, but that idea failed. So we are looking into Random multirace ship spawns.
Planetary Defenders
Basically "Ships of the week" like the Maquis, Sona, Ferrengi, Tammarian battle cruisers and the like.
Balancing: Darkshimmer has the Federation, Romulan, and Klingon Empire, and Unified Dominion balanced.
Gameplay: We now have a working Cloaking Device! Check the ModDB page for the WIP video. Cloaking will not be fully implemented in the mod until version 0.04
Art: We are working on an LCARS style UI, adding proper icons, and pictures for all of the new units. The UI is going to take a while to do, because of all of the redundancy of the Sins UI. SoA 2 uses 2 sets of UI textures. Instead of the standard 4 textures for buttons, and 2 textures for icons. SoA 2 uses 8 textures for buttons, and 4 textures for icons which IMO is a major waste of resources, because sins loads all these textures at startup. Unfortunetly i dont see any other way to do it. What is kind of cool is that we dont have to use the same HUD for each faction. It is possible to have unique HUDs, but again the perfomance hit, because of the extra drain on resources could be big, and not worth it.
In Planning: (No promises, or guarentees, but we will try to add these if possible.)
Troop Transport effects.
Planetary invasion animations
Tractor beams. (need a code monkey for this)
Whatever else we can think of and are capable of doing.
Future Updates:
SoA 2 0.04 is now in planning, and will be focused primarily on Proper research trees, Ability's, and adding proper Structures. More than likely demo 0.04 will be the last demo. After that then the full mod should be ready.
SoA 2 0.05 will be the final spit, and polish of the mod. It will focus mainly on re-balancing if needed. Also final artwork changes will be made here. Which will include some ship model re-builds, and re-texturing.
The Full SoA 2 1.0 mod will be released "When it is Finished". We are doing this on our own free time. We aren't getting paid to do this. We have no set schedule. We have no time limit. I want this one to be good. So it wont go online until we feel it is ready.
*NOTE: Much about Sins as we are all now realizing is hardcoded. SoA 2 is going to be far from a perfect "trek" mod due to these hardcoded issues. However we will try to do the best we can with workarounds, and compromises to get it as close as possible. Like i said some things wont be perfect. Some things cannot be done at all. Enjoy the mod for what it is, and try not to be too "nit picky".SoA2 will be hosted on Mod Database once it is ready http://www.moddb.com/mods/star-trek-sacrifice-of-angels-2This main header will be updated when i have news to post.
Why we havent seen any of his work. HAHAHAHA JK. Thank you for all the hard work Mr Darkshimmer. We know you are doing great cause stress tells us it is so.
Looks fantastic Major and Dark! Thanks for your hard work!
Awesome job on the mod guys! Can't wait to get my hands on the next version. (Will wait however long it takes of course)
I realize you all have been working at this for awhile and I might be offering ideas a bit late (I also was too lazy to search all the posts to see if these idea had been said as well). It would be really cool if you could have specific ships available, like Voyager as a cruiser that you can only buy 1 of. I understand you are using the Alpha quadrant but the Kazon or the (hunter like race in the Delta Quadrant) would make for good pirates in some future update.
Maybe for the tech tree you could unlock different characters, maybe you get Worf who unlocks Data -> Riker -> Picard and you get bonuses to all Galaxy class ships for each of them. Or for the tech tree (Federation) you could have the different races, so for one you would have Betazoid and with that you could see ships that were jumping into your space, that kind of stuff.
I remember there was some episode where the Enterprise is involved in war games, so maybe you get a war games research option where you 'learn new tactics' resulting in some power up. I haven't watchd DS9 in a long time so most of my references are from TNG or VOY. In the research tree you could have Chief Obrien, who gives some regeneration bonuses to all shields and hulls as well as activates an ability or further improvement on defiant class ships. For the Klingons you could have an 'A Targ for Every Ship' research option that offers a bump to shield mitigation as Targs were lucky I think. A
n idea for a super battleship you could only get one of would be the future enterprise from TNG's finale, same with the Klingon future ship, and to get those you would need some research of course. Maybe on galaxy class ships or only the enterprise or voyager you have an ability called 'Q', and this option can only be used when the ship is in critical health and it randomly either refills the shields or 'jumps' the ship to the exact opposite part of the gravity well. I think I could go on forever with ideas and I'll post more if I come up with any I can't help but share. Thanks for reading all this.
I also realize 1100 posts are a bit much to catch up on. Which is why i update the main topic from time to time. So all that is needed to read is the main topic, and maybe 1 or 2 pages back to get the most recent info on the mod.
The mod is set during, and post Dominion War era. Basically late TNG era though we do use TMP era units. It has been established during the Dominion war that TMP, and in some cases rare TOS era units were still very much in service.
Im not going to use crazy, or ugly non-canon fan designs. I am using the best of the trek mod community. I have only 1 fan design in the mod so far, but it looks awesome. The others are FASA (or based off of FASA units), and Klingon Academy units.
No superweapons.. Again, NO Superweapons! and/or "Uber ships" which means No Scimitar.
I have only 1 concert design model which is the D-4 that was meant to be the 22nd century klingon battlecruiser,. It was never used in the show so it is fair game for any era now. That, and maybe the romulan bop are the only units from ENT ill consider using. The klingon raptor was a nice design too, but i have nowhere to put it. There are only 15 roletypes in sins. Screw around with the roletypes, and you mess up the AI. Regardless Nothing from enterprise will be mentioned here. The show sucked, and while i may use some alien units from the show, as far as the mod is concerned ENT doesnt exist.
ONLY the Intrepid is in the mod, and thats only to make you guys happy. If i had my way it would NOT be there. Voyager ranks right up there with Enterprise as far as trek shows that sucked. The killer b's should have quit while they were ahead with ds-9.
I see where you are going with the hero unit's, and we tried something similar to it in 0.02. Except it was with the ships themselves. If we did persona's as heroes this would be SW: Empire at War, not Star trek:Soa 2. This mod is not supposed to be upbeat, and root beer bubbly like the federation. It is a time of galactic total war, and very dark. Not Warhammer40k there is only war dark, but ww1/ww2 type dark.
We are not touching the research tree until 0.04 and later. Right now no unit requires a research pre-req. Once we start work on 0,04 then we will focus on research and structures (its in the main topic).
i personally fiddled around with the units/reaserch in my version (i.e. Excelsulior/Miranda/Ambassador were the only selectable units with no Pre reaserch stuff) and i say NO to too much reaserching for the ships (except for things like the Venture/Excelsulior Refits. those would kinda make sense)
OK dont want to get stress angry
killer Bs...nice
The war was a good idea, and gave us some great badass fights. If they had just cut a few episodes of 5 and 6, they could have had the 4-5 good episodes on 7 to end 6 and finished there.
Time to show off some of the new Romulans. Well they arent new. Just newly imported.
1st is the elite Melak class warbird. The precurser to the DDeridex. Just as the Ambassador is the precurser to the Galaxy class. It is speculated it was this type of warbird that attacked Naranda III destroying the Enterprise C, and participated in the Khitomer massacre. She was seen in the opening cutscene of ST: New Worlds. She looks a lot smaller next to the elite DDeridex, but she is in the correct scale.
Next we have the elite Valdore Warbird, and in formation with her are the V-30 Winged Defender, The T-10 Bright One, and the V-7 Whitewind. Those familiar with FASA will easily recognise the designs, and where the mods influence is coming from.
Last i was going to save for a surprise, but i figured what the hell. The V-11 "Stormbird" battlecruiser in formation with a V-30 Winged Defender. She is a romulan aquired, and re-engineered klingon d-7 battlecruiser. Like the ones seen in TOS the enterprise incident. The V-11 is slightly more advanced, but not near as powerful as a TNG era ship. Her sole purpose now is to rain flaming plasma torpedo death on worlds resisting romulan rule.
and we aint close to done yet!
Wow, all excellent work! It's such a shame, though, that the Romulans have such a limited canonical fleet lineup for the next-gen era - they don't even have any kitbash designs of the Warbird, which one would think would be fairly easy to do some cool stuff with. Hell, they never even did the lazy and obvious single-hull varient. I guess they figured that the D'Deridex is so distinctive and awesome looking that they never needed anything else, but still.
Very nice looking ships guys. Thanks for all your hard work Stress and Shimmer. Can't wait to take these out for a spin.
OMG, WOW!!!! Thanks guys, it's looking awesome!!
Same can be said about the Klingons as well. TPTB used the "One hull fits all" theory in the case of the b'rel, and the Everlasting Ktinga wannabe/D-7/Ktinga. When i saw ENT use a Ktinga model in unexpected, that was all she wrote for me with the show. Yea yea i know it was supposed to be John Eaves D-4, but the model wasnt ready yet yada yada. At least TNG tried to make an effort into giving klinks newer ship designs in the case of the Vorcha, and Negh Var. It is a pity that redresses of other races ships were used for transports, and they used an ancient Promellian battlecruiser as one of Martoks house ships (no that ship will NOT be in the mod).
They tried to push since the rommies re-apeared in TNG that they use the "bigger is better" theory as far as ship design. It didnt work out too well for them in the Dominion War, because the Rommies seem to have been limited by the DDeridex. They lost many during the war. She makes a good capital ship, but not a good jack of all trades ship as they were trying to push it as. Thank god for FASA, and those that Modeled the FASA ships.
I am going to use the ENT era BoP as the rommie colony ship. She is a substitute for the FASA V-1 Starglider. She will have the V-1 specs, but in game she will be called the dragon class (hommage to Redragon the models author).
Wow! Those Romulans look sweet! Great job MS.
In defence of the Romulans on this matter, It can be retconned that they are using older ships as they run out of Warbirds.
Bump!
I think I had already given up on Enterprise by that point (it pretty much just took sitting through Broken Bow to do that) but having looked up the D-4 on Ex-Astris-Scientia.org, it looks nearly identical to the D-7 anyway, yet again demonstrating Enterprise's complete lack of creativity.
more rather, the klingons lack of creativity. Cannonically, the klingons seldom made changes in hull design. This isn't even a retcon so don't try to write it off as one, it was establihed before then.
Ah. The thing is in the other series it was more about budget than anything else. It costed a ton of money back then to build a new studio model. TOS obviously didnt have any budget. Which is why we got ridgeless klinks. Yes gene said if he had the cash he would have put ridges on em. Maybe used real rocks instead of styrofoam boalders.
TNG had a rocky start too. Encounter at farpoint, and most of the 1st season was following TOS's footsteps on the cheese factor. As time went on it got real good. Only 2 new klingon ships though. and we didnt see the Negh'Var (voodieh variant) till the last episode. That established that the klinks use the same hull designs for centurys. The problem i had with ENT and especially unexpected was they used a KTINGA. Not a Redressed, or kitbashed D-7 plastic model they could have got from any hobby store at the time. They used the same studio model used in all the other series and TMP. Just repainted. We already know it was supposed to be the John Eaves D-4 CGI. They didnt even try to "downgrade" the Ktinga they used. Just change the color, and add some unecessary glowys. I dont buy that the ktinga is 200+ years old. As much as i love that ship i dont see it being 22nd century material. It was just lazyness, and ineptness on the fx dept. The D-4 CGI would have been awesome to see. Sure it looks like a D-7, It is supposed to be the precurser to the D-7/Ktinga. No matter. It wasnt shown on screen therefore non-canon so now its a 24th century ship in the mod
Quick update.. The Federation, Klingons, and Romulans now have full ship lineups. 0.03a is in the final balancing, and testing stages. It is classic TNG faction warfare until we can get the dominion in. Im am working on some of the UI textures now to see if i can improve it a bit, and add some more LCARS menus. No guarentees though, its a tough job. Thanks go to Darkshimmer for the new balancing system, and 0.03 weapon effects
The Dominion, and finished pirates will be in 0.03b. Though i have a full dominion lineup it will take too long to get em all in and balanced before the end of the year.
Dang guys this is great you will be releasing this balanced. It is going to make it so much more fun like this. Brilliant way to go
Well, if you consider that the Bird of Prey's lifespan is identical to that of the Excelsior (they both showed up for the first time in STIII) and that the Vor'Cha and Negh'Var were both introduced in the TNG era, no, I wouldn't say that the Klingons seldom make changes in hull design relative to other races. The K'tinga only showed up again (excluding one episode of TNG where there was an old "sleeper ship") when they needed fodder in DS9's battle scenes and wanted more than three ship types.
Like Stress says, it was laziness on the part of Enterprise to not redo the ship. They've said they ran out of time to finish the model, but c'mon - if it's not ready, don't do that episode yet. They overused the Klingons in Enterprise anyway...in fact, they shouldn't have been using them at all, since first contact with the Klingons was supposed to take place after the formation of the Federation, which in turn took place after the Earth-Romulan War. All they gained by making that change was the ability to re-use an enemy that had already been done to death, and they didn't even do it right by giving them period ships.
To Enterprise's credit there are a couple of good ship designs that came from the show. They didnt fit the era, but regardless they are good ships. The Raptor was an excellent Klingon ship design. Unfortunetly it suffered the too advanced for the time problem like most of the rest of the ships in ENT did. The "old" Romulan BoP is nice too. Its problem is it looks like it belongs in the TNG era.
My only beef with the ENT era alien designs is they ALL (ships with nacelles) suffer from "Jem Hadar" syndrom. Pointy dagger shaped nacelles with lots of glows that are totally unecessary. Damn near all the klingons cept for the re-used Ktinga (a league of its own) suffer from it. The romulans suffer from it, and if the Vulcans used nacelles instead of ringed warp drive im sure they would have caught the "killer B jemmy desease" too. Im not saying they should have made the ships look like old flash gordan rocketships, or something out of the 60's, but they could have make them look far less advanced than they did. Not adding so many damn glows would have been a step in the right direction. The 22nd Century Klink BoP is without a doubt the worst looking ship in the show. I am surprised they didnt cut corners and re-use the B'rel.
IMO, the Tellerite and the Andorion ships looked very good, and didn't look copycatted at all. Infact, both introduced ellements that would be used in later Fed ships (Tellerite: Raised cre area, Andorian: Two section hull)

When you guys finally release this will it be workable with the 1.12 patch? Nice work by the way this is really the only mod i've been dying to get my hands on can't wait for you guys to release it.
