ooh, that's cool man. real cool.
Something I thought was already an option, but I'd like to be able to select "grow" as a mouseover effect on zoomers. Tabbed dock entries already "grow" on mouseover, but it'd be cool for zoomers too.
I also think that the user ought to be able to set the amount of "grow."
For that matter, how about all the other mouseover effects being enabled for tabbed docks?
I hope the "grow" feature for tabbed docks gets an overhaul. Currently it draws a bigger icon over the normal state icon. (Watch it closely when you mouseover)
There have been instances where I've had the "grown" image still there after I've moved my mouse...this looks terrible, especially with a transparent icon...
I don't know if this was mentioned.......( sorry for being too lazy to read through all 7 pages if it was )........I think it would be a good idea to either make OD able to read the Plus and Minus Images like every other image in the skin ( without the need of a specified file path ) or to move the OD Library to C:\Users\Public\Documents\Stardock..... This way We can make Tabbed docks with Plus and Minus Images with a file path that will work for everyone! ( I personally think My first option would be best ). I know that You and Giz usually include instructions to put the Tabbed docks in C:\Program Files\Stardock\ObjectDock\Backgrounds..... and I hate to be the barer of bad news......( if You were not already aware of it )......... I recently got a new laptop, I went from 32 bit to 64 bit and the file path is different......' Program Files (x86) ' I think if this problem is not already being addressed, it might be best to instruct people to first create a folder ' Plus and Minus' in C:\Users\Public\Documents\Stardock, and have the Plus and Minus Images in their own folder, with sub folders...depending on how many backgrounds.....and have them put it in the ' Plus and Minus ' folder that they made. And of course, to configure the docks for that file path. Otherwise people will have to open each config and change the file path for themselves, We will have to make two sets of backgrounds, or just stop making plus and minus images at all.
Another thing......... I know You talked about, when choosing a Tabbed dock, for it to start at the current dock and not go back to the top of the list.......once again, sorry for being lazy if it was already mentioned...... but, how about if when You click on the list a second time, You could then type or start to type the name of a background ( if You know what it's named anyway ) and it jumped to that place in the list.
This is a good request. OD has a search for images currently so that would be a logical addition. About the Plus/Minus images...I dunno, I do like your idea about the user creating their own Plus/Minus folder and then dropping a folder into that containing the plus/minus for the theme...I think I'll look into that some more. Good idea there "Fred".
*edit - the plus/minus thing is still being hashed out in my head...don't know what I'm going to do yet. I think it has to remain easy for the user though, above all.
Glad You like the ideas! ........... Assuming You are going with My suggested file path
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Stardock\???????
Let's agree upon a folder name.......so We don't have Users making a thousand folders all over the place.....
( a ) PlusMinus
( b ) Plus_Minus
( c ) Plus and Minus
Also, would You want to post an article about this for all Tabbed dock skinners or should I ??? Pobably just a quick something with a link to here and telling them to please read Replys #155 - whatever.............so they can use the same layout.
I think it would make more sense if Stardock decided on a full unified directory structure for all the customization products. Having separate folders for each app is nothing but annoying.
Well, therin lies the problem...we have to make it as simple as we can for users...in that ObjectDock Library folder, there is a folder for special images that has folders for running indicators etc. You could put the PlusMinus folder there and then when they dl a package, the instructions say to place folder x into that folder.
The thing that bugs me is that there are two places for ObjectDock backgrounds. One in the my documents location, and one in the C drive location. And you never know where the user places their stuff. Currently, I hard code mine to be in the C:\Program Files\Stardock\ObjectDock\Backgrounds and then the package folder name and then the actual docks folder. All I have to do is instruct the user to ensure they place their entire package in that structure to be able to use the plus/minus images. They do however have to place 2 other folders into 2 other folders, i.e. the running indicators and the weather backdrops, so a user that is currently doing that would probably be ok with doing the plus/minus one as well...but then we come back to where are they doing it. C: location or My Documents location...
Quoting Myself from My RC thread, because it would be cool for OD as well.........
I think separate folders for each app is ok, as long as its in the same location. Like currently with C:\Program Files\Stardock. Inside that is Impulse, ObjectDesktop (with WB, RC et inside that) and ObjectDock etc...this is fine. It's the pesky Stardock folder that also is now under C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Stardock for Windowblinds or the same for OD...I don't understand why this was done other than to share the WB and Docks with all on the PC. It's frustrating to say the least.
Yeah, like the munkeh said on "Fred's" RC thread, it's something I've wanted for OD for awhile.
If they are doing it in C:, right now the path is different for 64 bit, if it is in My Documents, that's no good either because everyone has a different username, I forgot to mention it before........
but the 64 bit has both Program Files and Program Files (x86) however the Stardock folder is installed to the (x86) one......
We could have just the 64 bit users create the same folder structure in Program Files......and then when We make a skin, make a seperate folder with the Plus/Minus images and then just to put that folder with the Plus/Minus only, in the C: location and then it wouldn't matter if the dock was there or in the documents.

This would be great, but then there would either have to be a way to select the images like the running indicators, otherwise the whole OD library needs to be moved to the Public Documents.....
I'd say make the backgrounds so they are saved in the user's Documents, that'll make it easier for the user to back them up. Then allow all the peripheral graphics to be placed somewhere in there.
I personally like how WindowBlinds puts all the graphics for one skin in one folder. The only problem there is that those folders (for WB skins) are well hidden.
Quoting myself from another post...
I just think this would be a GREAT way to go with OD skinning. And this would incorporate a lot of what was mentioned above.
That sounds cool, I would have to dust mine off first, and then get un-intimidated by it!
I didn't think about the intimidation factor. I was intimidated by SKS at first, too.
Maybe they could make a utility for OD like the RightClick skin editor. Maybe said utility could incorporate SKS style settings.
That would be really cool! ........I still want to eventually get into SKS!
Running Indicators--it would be nice to be able to set these so that they are either in front or behind the icon. Currently, it seems as though they are always in front of the icon.
I just tried to create a custom running indicator. It was a glowing faded ball of light. I thought it would look really cool if the icons of the active programs were "glowing." But when I applied it, the glowing ball covered the icon!
Just a thought...
They are. It's like an overlay. Which can actually have a pretty cool effect...ask Zubaz about "Protection".
How about if OD used bitmaps!
