A banner can be anything you like really. Download Gimp (it's free) and try some of the banner create tools in there.
To make your image linkable it's much the same code as to show an image but with the following added....
{link="web address of page/site you want to link to"}{img}hosting path of your image for your banner.png{/img}{/link}*
Yellow is path to the image, red is path to the site/page you wish to link.
* Replace all { } with [ ].
