Multiplayer in Galactic Civilizations II is commonly discussed. You can read HERE the rationale as to why it wasn't part of the base game.
This thread has been created so that people can discuss multiplayer in a single place. Multiplayer will not be added as part of some update (or "patch"). There has been discussion of having it be in some future "Ultimate" edition of the game (i.e. in the future) once the Stardock multiplayer libraries for Society are completed.
Please do not create additional threads on the topic of multiplayer unless there is something new to add that isn't contained herein. Thank you!
It is to bad I missed the poll on multiplayer so long ago. I c hecked the forums when i first bought the game but when I saw that there did not seem any inclination of the developers to include MP I left and this is the first I have been back. The truth is that when the game first came out my friend and I bought a copy to test play it for going MP with our friends. Boy where we surprised when we found out there was none. We both played it and it was fun enough but if I could go back I would have passed the game over. The game was good and I enjoyed the time but there is no AI that keeps my interest for an extended period of time. While this games AI was good it was not as good as my friends or even the best I have seen. In the end I would love to play this game some more.....with my friends. I am not going to buy the expansions without multiplayer. My friends who would have bought the game to play with me are not going to buy it either. Yes multiplayer takes time and money but there are also a lot of add on sales that multiplayer brings. When I find a good multiplayer game I bring at least 4 of my friends into the game with me. Thats 5 copies of everything for just my original purchase. Still I can not tell you how many more games you would have sold if you had MP and if it would have been worth it but I do know that looking at just the people who post here or did the poll is not really an accurate view of the way it works. For the people who say that multiplayer just brings the vocal minority out I disagree. Yes if this game MP you would see more people on here talking about multiplayer because people like me don't post much on games we don't play. Mabey the fact that so many people show up after multiplayer is implemented and start saying what they want is the best sign how many people and sales this game is leaving out.
In the end I will not buy this game without multiplayer and even if it gets it or future versions do I am hesitant about buying it simply based on how little support it has recieved so far. Still I would buy the game for MP so I guess that says how much I like this game and wish I could share it with the people I like.
I still play AOE, Star Craft, Civ, MoO and other multiplayer games because the human element keeps it fun. In fact I will probably call up my friends today and see if they are up for a game of MoO3. The AI isn't as good and the graphics are old but we have a blast with the multiplayer. In fact the reason we where looking at GC2 was because we thought it would play like an updated MoO. Oh well after buying 20 copies between all of us I suppose we need to get our moneys wroth anyway.
P.S. feel free to respond to my post but do not expect me to respond. I'll probably check back in six months or more to see if they have multiplayer but it seems unlikely that I will see MP and know that this post is mostly just to show how I feel. For those of you who are playing this game have fun. I wish no ill will to solo players and am glad that you are able to enjoy such a good game. After all to each there own.
What I miss is co-op with my friends. Either 2 vs however many the game cann throw at us, and we build our civilivations specifically to support each other. Or even team matches 2v2vAI, those kinds of things I always loved. Especially when games can have 8-16 players.
I want multi-player because my parents are divorced and i only get to see my dad every other weekend but he has a computer and bought the game to entertain us after we had done everything we wanted to do together. We liked the game so he bought me a copy I got crushed when I read there was no multi-player because it would bring us together for we are very competitive and let us have fun together every day. I would gladly pay $40.00 to have multi-player and have a daily or even weekly game time with my dad I wouldn't care if its on one computer or computer-to-computer it would sure be nice to play with my dad.
Ok, its time to bring out the big guns..
Can I pueeease have multiplayeer?
You know you cant really resist the cute cat!
This thread is over four years old. If multi was going to be implemented it would have been accomplished already.
But GalCiv is eternal.
So then, what's 4 years?
Clearly this is an older post, but I'd like to voice my opinion as well. Multiplayer is something that I would absolutely love to have in this game. I have doubts about the method used to collect people's opinion concerning multiplayer as well, as there are some out there who refused to buy the game due to a lack of multiplayer, and thus most wouldn't be involved in the poll concerning whether people want it or not. I have at least two friends (subjective, I know) who don't have the game for the very reason that it doesn't contain multiplayer. I myself held off for years for that very reason, and I'm almost certain that we can't be alone in this.
As for the argument that the game would be limited in same way due to multiplayer, I have my doubts. There have been statements made that the AIs treat the player like it treats one another, so that shouldn't be an issue. As well, the random events can be disabled already via the UI, and if they occurred I imagine that players would have a similar reaction as the AI would (going to war to stop someone from developing some super tech, so on). Basically, the arguments presented were compelling only so far as the base game went, but far from it for an expansion. All of the features are in the game already that were listed as reasons against multiplayer, and now that they're there they would no longer detract from the development of a multiplayer experience.
Just wanted to toss my voice in there, and maybe see this thread get some more traction again. I doubt that we'll see multiplayer, but I don't doubt that it would mean fun for many and money for the devs if we did.
I too would pay money for a multiplayer expansion. Here are my thoughts; I don't know how many of them are original. For my own amusement, I decided to make some of them similes.
In the in-game options menu there should be an option in % for how many players need to click Turn before the game advances.
Two humans, 51% vote: Both players have to click turn before the game moves.
Four humans, 51% vote: Three players would have to click turn. The game advances, and the fourth player doesn't have to stop placing blinking lights on the ship he's building to appease everyone else. The turn button on his screen depresses as if he clicked it.
Three humans, 1% vote: The game would advance as soon as one person clicked Turn.
Many humans, 1% vote: Virtually RTS.
